9x12 inches, pencil on gessoed board, digital color. Week 1, Month of Fear 2016 Hidden mothers in Victorian photographs are woman �hiding� under dark cloths holding their children as still as possible while the photographer takes a typically long exposure for the era. We �see� the mother under the cloth when we have a surviving photo that was never cropped in tightly on the child. There is a strange uncertainty about some of these photos however. Victorians would also take last photographs holding deceased loved ones, their hands sometimes tied piously into a position of prayer. Looking at these antique unlabelled photos we can�t be entirely sure if we are looking at someone living or dead.
