Description
'Namahage' by Lance Red 16" x 16" Oil paint on gallery wood panel This painting is part of an ongoing personal series focused on yokai creatures from Japanese mythology and folklore. The Namahae is a sort of Japanese boogie-man who steals away lazy children. Culturally they are used to scare wayward children into behaving, doing their chores, and schoolwork, lest the Namahage come to steal them away. While the Namahage appears fierce they are actually well-meaning yokai because they want the children to perform well and if the children correct their ways they are known to then bless that household.
