Basil Gogos

Basil Gogos was born in Egypt, and although he spoke Arabic, Greek and some French, Basil did not speak English until he came to the United States when he was 16 years old. Basil showed a talent for art when he was young, but his older brother seemed like he would be the artist. However, when his older brother lost interest in drawing, Basil picked up the pencil and soon began impressing people with his natural ability. As a young man, Basil drifted in and out of various art schools while trying to find the right direction for his art. He studied at the National School of Design in Washington, D.C., the Phoenix School of Design, and the School of Visual Arts in New York. Finally at the Art Students League in New York, Basil felt he made his greatest strides as an artist.

In the fall of 1960, Basil received a call from James Warren of Warren Publications, asking if he would paint the cover of one of his new magazines, Famous Monsters of Filmland. Basil accepted and the rest is history. Since that date Basil Gogos has created dozens of covers for Famous Monsters of Filmaland.

Basil has painted hundreds of Covers for various books and magazines and continues his work today in his Manhattan Studio.
