I got the idea for this painting by perusing old magazines from the 50' s. In one I found picture of the very first curling rods for women. It showed a woman with rods in her hair that were connected to cords going up to the ceiling. I assumed it was because back then the plugs were in the ceiling rather then walls. It was bizarre. Solid state incorporates a painting technique that is spontaneous, splashing color with a brush about the board and letting it pool and bubble to create unusual textures. I also used sponges and saran wrap in places. But then creating the figure involved more painstaking work and detail. If you look closely you will see a solitary tear on her left breast. It was important for me to impart some human qualities in what might seem an emotionless countenance. Acrylic on Panel 19" X29" dark black 2" thick wood frame. Science Fiction Chronicle April of 1989. Painting was reworked in 1992.
