Description
I support immediate and radical action to defend our oceans, which are faced with extreme danger from overfishing, pollution and climate change. Over 3.5 billion people rely on the oceans for their primary source of food, and according to the United Nations, nearly half of Earth's population lives within 50 miles of the coast. The combined effects of ocean acidification, long-line commercial fishing and plastic dumping - totaling eight million metric tons of hazardous, wildlife-suffocating waste every year - have placed crucial food supplies on the verge of collapse, even as sea-level rise threatens to make coastal zones uninhabitable and has already begun to force low-lying islands to consider evacuation. The crisis facing us is abundantly clear, and we cannot afford to deliberate or procrastinate any longer: this is a matter of life and death.
