About Lisa French

My studio practice involves anthropomorphized wildlife in allegorical tableaux.  These works rely on invented realism and illusionistic rendering, with special attention to comparative anatomy and theatrical lighting.  I use traditional media, primarily oil and gouache.  As an illustrator, I specialize in anatomical illustration and work mostly with figurative, zoological, and botanical subject matter for advertising, packaging, institutions and publishing.  My work is included in numerous juried professional exhibitions and annuals, and my awards include Gold and Silver medals.

I relocated from Southern California to the West Coast of Florida and now live on the Boston South Shore.

I continue to work on a series of paintings exploring hedgerow flora and fauna as metaphor for the human community - allegorical scenes that represent relationships and interactions in the human community, including the darker motivations that drive human interactions.  These works reference Joel Chandler Harris’ Tales of Uncle Remus.  My painting practice also involves observational figure and landscape, and I experiment with scenic design, conceptual toy theater and small scale sculpture.  One experimetal project addresses the historical period of Reconstruction through a series of tableaux representing the phenomena of collective denial and the reactionary mindset.
